Collect WhatsApp Opt-ins from your Shopify Checkout
Collect WhatsApp Opt-ins from your Shopify Checkout
Updated over a week ago

🛍️ Ready to broaden your communication reach and increase revenue through WhatsApp? You've come to the right spot! This guide will demonstrate how to leverage one of the two most used opt-in collection: your Shopify checkout.

Shopify’s checkout process is a critical touchpoint for customer interaction. By incorporating an option for customers to opt-in to WhatsApp communications during checkout, you can enhance your direct engagement efforts and capitalize on a moment when their interest in your brand is at its peak.

Collecting phone numbers and opt-ins in Shopify

At the beginning of Shopify’s checkout form

Set up your Shopify checkout form to ask for a phone number as the customer’s primary contact information. If a phone number is entered, you can configure the form to prioritize WhatsApp opt-in.

While collecting their phone number, you will also need their explicit consent to send them WhatsApp messages. Fortunately, the integration of phone numbers across Shopify makes this a straightforward addition.

To set this up, navigate to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin panel. Scroll to the section 'Customer contact method' and select the option 'Phone number or email'.

Gather opt-in at the end of the “contact information” checkout form

Incorporating a WhatsApp opt-in at the end of the Contact Information form is a seamless method to gather consents. This option will appear to customers as they finalize their contact details before proceeding to shipping options.

To make this change, return to the Settings > Checkout area in your Shopify admin panel. Look for a section titled 'Consent for marketing' and check the option for SMS marketing. You may also collect email addresses here for dual-purpose marketing. Ensure you include terms of service and privacy policy details, which are accessible from Shopify's legal settings.

Under the shipping address form section

Another strategic location for requesting a phone number is under the shipping details at the bottom of your checkout page.

Go to the Settings > Checkout section, scroll down until you find 'Form options', and decide whether to make providing a phone number Optional (recommended) or Required.

Add a WhatsApp disclaimer for compliance

For desktop

You can modify the disclaimer copy that appears with your SMS opt-in checkbox under the Contact information section of the checkout form. Go to the same Settings > Checkout page, and find 'Checkout language'. Click on 'Manage checkout language'.

Search for "accept marketing" to modify the "Accept marketing checkbox label" field. Your disclaimer might read:

“I agree to receive messages via WhatsApp from [Your Brand]. By opting in, I consent to receive marketing and transactional messages from [Your Brand] at the number provided. Message frequency varies. Msg & Data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe. View our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.”

To phone tooltip tool

Modify the tooltip under the Shipping address section of the checkout form to align with your branding and compliance standards. This tooltip provides additional guidance and legal information directly where customers input their phone numbers.

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings and then click on Checkout.

Scroll to Checkout language and click on the Manage checkout language button.

Use the browser’s search function (CTRL-F) and search for "phone tooltip" to locate the appropriate field quickly.

Once found, enter your custom disclaimer copy in the tooltip field. Here’s a suggested format for WhatsApp opt-ins:

“By providing your phone number, you agree to receive WhatsApp messages from [Your Brand]. Messages may include marketing and transactional content, such as cart reminders. Message frequency may vary. Msg & Data rates may apply. Text STOP to opt-out or HELP for assistance. See our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more details.”

After entering the disclaimer, scroll to the top of the page or press CTRL-HOME to navigate quickly, and click Save to apply the changes.

This tooltip ensures customers are well-informed about what they are opting into when they provide their phone number, enhancing transparency and trust. Setting up the entry point in Kiosk

In order to sync Shopify with Kiosk, go to Entry Points and create a Shopify checkout entry point:

Opt-in Collection

Now that your checkbox is integrated, customers can easily opt into WhatsApp messages as they complete their purchases. This straightforward method not only complies with legal requirements but also respects customer choice and privacy.

Optional: Send a Confirmation Message

Though not mandatory, sending a confirmation message via WhatsApp to verify their subscription can enhance transparency and customer trust. This message should confirm their opt-in and provide an easy way to opt out, reinforcing your commitment to their privacy and control over their data.

Conclusion

Integrating WhatsApp opt-in at your Shopify checkout is a strategic move that can lead to deeper customer relationships and more effective communication. With the steps outlined above, you are well-equipped to implement this feature and start engaging with your customers on one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms. Test your setup thoroughly to ensure a seamless user experience.
